On 11 June, our Stockholm book club met up again, and this time we dove into Embers by Sándor Márai. If you’ve read it, you know it’s not an action-packed book, but wow, the tension in that old castle is unbelievable. It’s basically a lifelong story wrapped into one intense dinner between two old friends who haven’t spoken in 41 years.

What We Talked About

The whole room was fascinated by Henrik and Konrad’s relationship. We spent a lot of time talking about how two people can be like brothers, and then a single moment, a shared secret, a hidden betrayal, can turn them into strangers for four decades. One of us pointed out that the longest, most painful conversations are often the ones we have in our own heads while waiting for answers. Henrik waited 41 years just to look his friend in the eye and ask his questions, and we all wondered out loud: Could any of us hold onto a grudge, or a search for truth, for that long?

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The conversation got really deep when we talked about the difference between facts and truth. By the end of the book, you realize it doesn’t even matter what actually happened in the past; what matters is how that betrayal shaped their entire lives. We talked about our own lives, how we handle disappointment, how friendships fade, and how aging changes the way we look at the people who hurt us. It made us realize that sometimes, forgiveness isn’t about the other person; it’s just about letting the fire burn out so you can finally have some peace.

What We Took Away

This session felt like sitting around a fireplace sharing our deepest thoughts on loyalty and time. It wasn’t a dry critique; it was an honest, vulnerable chat about the messy parts of human relationships. The vibe in Stockholm was incredibly warm, and it was beautiful to see everyone sharing their own stories about long-lost friends and life lessons. It reminded us exactly why we do this: to find pieces of our own stories in the pages of these incredible books.
