On 19 April, our community gathered once again for the second session of our monthly Book Club series. This time, we read and reflected on Animal Farm by George Orwell, a powerful allegory that invites readers to think critically about power, equality, and the dangers of corruption. Through a guided online discussion, participants explored how themes from the novel continue to resonate in today’s world. The conversation encouraged critical thought, personal reflection, and a deeper understanding of how literature can mirror both history and modern-day structures.

What We Discussed

The group reflected on Orwell’s portrayal of equality and questioned whether a truly equal society is possible. Several participants noted that the novel reveals how easily systems built on ideals can shift when power becomes concentrated. One attendee pointed out that the book suggests equality may remain an illusion when those in leadership fail to stay accountable. Another observed that inequality often starts subtly and becomes normalised before anyone realises what is being lost.

All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others. This line sparked strong reactions from the group. Many saw it as a powerful critique of hypocrisy in leadership and systems that claim to serve all but favour a few. The discussion turned personal as participants reflected on moments in their own lives when they had seen power change people or institutions. One person mentioned seeing leadership roles shift someone’s behaviour entirely, drawing a clear parallel with the characters in the novel. There was agreement that the book illustrates how corruption can begin with small compromises, and that unchecked authority often grows into something harmful.

What Participants Gained

This session offered more than literary analysis. For many, it was a chance to make connections between fiction and reality, to unpack the dynamics of leadership, and to reflect on the values they wish to uphold in their own communities. The atmosphere of mutual respect and thoughtful exchange helped participants feel heard and intellectually challenged. A few attendees expressed that it inspired them to think differently about their roles in collective spaces, and the ways they navigate power. As with our first session, this event continued our aim of creating spaces where young people can think critically, reflect openly, and grow through collective dialogue.
