On 15 February, we hosted our very first online Book Club session, kicking off with The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, a timeless novel that explores the pursuit of purpose, personal growth, and spiritual insight. This gathering marked the beginning of a series of events aimed at cultivating reflection, dialogue, and connection among young people through literature.

Ahead of the event, we shared a set of key discussion questions to encourage participants to reflect on the book’s central themes. These questions served as a starting point for the session, helping to guide a rich and thought-provoking conversation.

Themes We Explored

A central concept in The Alchemist is the idea of a Personal Legend, one’s true purpose or calling in life. Participants shared diverse interpretations. Participants offered a range of thoughtful interpretations. One attendee shared the view that a Personal Legend is not always something grand, but rather something deeply personal, the quiet force that continues to pull someone forward throughout life. Another participant remarked that the book served as a reminder of the truth held in childhood dreams. Although life may lead us away from those early aspirations, revisiting them can offer clarity and reconnection.

The novel’s emphasis on listening to one’s heart prompted a discussion on whether this is always the most reliable guide. Some participants valued the courage required to follow one’s inner voice, while others highlighted the need for discernment. One attendee noted that although the heart can be a powerful compass, it may sometimes be shaped by fear or uncertainty, suggesting that self-awareness and balance are key in decision-making.

We examined the novel’s emphasis on following one’s heart. Is this always the wisest course of action? While some participants valued the courage it takes to follow one’s inner voice, others highlighted the importance of balance. Your heart may guide you, but discernment matters. Sometimes what we call intuition is shaped by fear or doubt.

Outcomes and Impact

Participants described the session as grounding, reflective, and surprisingly personal. For many, it was a rare opportunity to pause and consider their own values, ambitions, and internal narratives, outside of academic pressure or social expectation.

Beyond the literary discussion, the event fostered a sense of community and mutual support. Young people from different backgrounds came together, not only to analyse a text, but to exchange lived experiences and perspectives.

To ensure an accessible and engaging session, we prepared a digital discussion guide, facilitated by our team. Participants were encouraged to join with notes, questions, or simply an open mind. The structure allowed space for both guided prompts and organic dialogue. This event also marked the launch of our monthly Book Club series, one of several initiatives under our youth empowerment programme, designed to promote critical thinking, emotional insight, and collective learning.

We’re excited to continue this journey with our next Book Club session, where we’ll explore another work of literature that speaks to personal transformation, identity, or social change. If you’re interested in joining the next session, keep an eye on our updates. Thank you to everyone who joined us for this meaningful first conversation. As The Alchemist teaches us, the journey matters, and it’s even more powerful when shared.
